The automation of air supply by using frequency inverters during the yeast fermentation (JSC Rigas Raugs)

food 13 1

It is necessary to supply the cells of the microorganisms with the oxygen in yeast production fermentation. Supplying the compressed air to the nozzles of the fermenters sparger provides it. At the beginning of the fermentation the compressed air consumption is relatively small, but at the end of fermentation it will achieve 10 m3/sec if the cultivation occurs in 100 m3 fermentator (as in given application). The two 200 kW and one 100 kW air compressors are used to reach such amount of air. Earlier during the fermentation process the amount of air was reduced using the manual valve. In such case the consumed power did not reduce substantially. Wherewith electric power is not used economically and cost price of the product enlarges unnecessary. The amount of air consumption now is regulated using the frequency inverters to economize the electric power. There were used two frequency inverters (the power of each is 200 kW )of the company "Danfoss".

This investment paid off during 10 months with economy of the electric power.

The application of controller for fully automated process is planed to introduce in the near future.
